Easy White Soda Bread

Hey Lovelies,

I’ve been experimenting with loads of easy bread recipes of late. I love baking fresh bread but hate the mountain of ingredients you sometimes need to make it.

A successful recipe for me is when its has assessable ingredients (a bonus is if you have them already in the press!) take very little time and is easy to put together, having all of this with absolutely no compromise in taste


  • 500g self-raising flour
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate soda
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 70g cubed cold butter
  • 400 ML milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence


You will need a large mixing bowl and a measuring jug 

Preheat oven 180c fan gas mark 4

Line a large baking tray with greaseproof paper

Sifting the flour and bicarbonate soda add all the dry ingredients to your mixing bowl

Add the cold cubed butter to the mixing bowl working it with your fingertips until you have a fine bread crumbs

Make a well in the middle and add the milk and vanilla  quarter by quarter mixing as you add

When mixed add more flour if it looks too wet and flour your hands (you should have a light a fluffy dough)

Tip onto a floured surface and give a little kneed

Shape into a ball and score an x on top, this helps it cook in the centre

Place onto a lined floured baking tray and oven bake on the middle shelf for 40 mins  (do not open the oven door while it’s baking)

Check with a skewer and if it comes out clean your bread is cooked through

Leave to cool  upside down wrapped up in a damp teatowel
