what a busy few weeks it’s been, so you can imagine how I felt when I received a VIP invite to the launch of “taste of Dublin” .. (pinch me now)….
If you have never been “taste of Dublin” is an action packed day out, with everything from interactive classes by star chefs , masterclasses, wine , champagne and food experiences.. (right up my street..eh.. WINE and FOOD)
So I dropped “yum” off with one yummy sis in law and headed off to town , on the luas, .. camera.. check.. phone check… chefs hat and apron check… I was rearing to go…
when I arrived I was escorted to the champagne Taittinger VIP suite, I was on me own, so to say I didn’t feel a tad out of place, would be lying.. I headed off to the bar and got myself a mojito.. (gin for breakfast .. 21 again .. she jokes) The bar staff were so friendly and as I sipped on my mojito ,I wandered off to the back. looking around.. taking it all in. I spotted Rosanna Davison , with the corner of my eye, and nearly walking into a parasol and taking the head off myself (yes she is as beautiful in real life ) .. I composed my self enjoyed my drink.. studied the “show guide, these are free on the way in and I recommend taking one”)
And planned my day.
The festival is a currency free event. so you have to get tokens called florins.. each florin is worth €1.. so I also felt like I was
on me holidays too..
With my VIP Pass, I received 2 tokens to get 2 free signature dishes.. I headed off to the open table and had a sample of the Dublin bay prawns. These were served with a garlic butter and cachelo potato. The prawns were to die for.. but the potatoes were a little hard for my taste. I did enjoy it all the same.
It was now 1.30 and I wanted catch Anna Haugh and Simon Lamont in the Electrolux taste theatre do a chef demonstration. I am a huge fan of both.. Anna working for no other than “Gordon Ramsey” and simons infections personality and no-nonsense approach to cooking. (whats not to love) When they finished I went over to have a chat. I was gobsmacked that Simon knew who I was and really liked my blog , Anna was a lovely friendly down to earth girl.
I checked my watch because I was booked into the chefs secrets interactive cooking feature with Neven Magure (this is free and I highly recommend it if you’re a keen cook, but book it as soon as you arrive in the Electrolux chefs secrets area) as I was saying… I checked my watch and I had time for a vino.. so I had a mini wine tasting with the guys from beaujolails , I settled with a glass of julienas (a markup from my usual lidl shiraz) but at 6 florins for a good glass not too pricey.
I sipped on it as I headed over to the chefs secrets area.. The Que to get in was huge.. because I was booked in , could jump to Que a bit.. a huge “fully booked” sign hung in front and as I was heading in I couldn’t help but overhear a lovely family from louth trying to get their father in (he was the cook of the house and is found in the kitchen every evening). I chatted briefly with them and said to ” dad” sure come in with me, I spotted that each cooking station was for two and I was on me lonesome.. it would be a shame to let it go to waste!! He was delighted.
Neven,s cook along was excellent.. the recipe for scallops and sauce Vierge was a taste sensation ( I will blog it in full in the coming weeks) louth dad enjoyed it so much he cut his poor finger .. but we had such a laugh and were in our element. I had a chat with Neven and have to say he was so encouraging about what i was doing and my blog.. a true gent.
when I was finished in the chef’s secrets area I headed back over to use up my other signature dish vocher.. this time I had braised short rib , white onion, risotto with a pine nut gremolata .. this in short was “delicious” but to top it off I could bring it over to the Whelan’s pub area and enjoyed a drink and some live music with it.. the best of both worlds…
In short the day flew in (went too fast, to be honest) I loved it.. the food , wine , music, cook along and louth dad all made it a deadly experience. I would truly recommend anyone who’s at a loose end popping in this weekend…. I will be back next year. guaranteed
