Barbie has just had a bit of a makeover, and I’m not talking extra contouring or butt implants, I’m talking a realistic positive body image that will appeal to girls and boys (gender quality all the way here) from all diversities, with 3 new body shapes, curvy, petite and tall and a ton of new looks.
I loved Barbie growing up, I remember getting a barbie tropical house for Christmas one year and thinking to myself “I must have been so good this year for Santa to bring me this”. It was the best present ever! I spent months playing with it, swinging barbie in her little hammock to sleep, and when I found this image of it on Pinterest my heart did a huge nostalgic flutter. Isn’t that the magic of Christmas, getting a toy that resonates with you for the rest of your life. That can still give you joy 30 years later, by just looking a picture if it. Now in my head, it was a lot bigger, and I could never figure why Barbie needed a mat in her tropical house, (sure that was only a trip hazard when getting out of her hammock ) 😉
Roll on 30 years and while Barbie is still as popular as ever. The Barbie Fashionista doll,s are sending out the positive message that sometimes one size doesn’t fit all. We are all different and unique in our own right, you don’t have to be a blonde beauty queen to have beauty, we are all beautiful (a cliché , I know, but such an important message to our kids) The range has a wide variety of hair colour, styles, eye colour, skin tones and face shapes. With options of endless styling fun, ( Styling Barbie, I could do it for hours ) styles like boho chic to sporty tank dresses. Their hair styles are right on trend from short bangs (I remember my sister cutting her Barbies hair in the exact same style) to asymmetrical cuts, with shades of brunette and blonde, black, modern purple and our favourite rich red to choose from.
With “yum” having red hair she loved the red-haired Barbie in particular, we had a great time playing together (no she didn’t have to pry her out of my hands I swear) dressing her, taking her shoes off and putting them back on (just like real life, cause “yum” does this with her own shoes around 20 times a day). Because I have such fond memories of playing with Barbie, it was lovely to see her through my girlies eyes.
